Hi-tech trawl equipment for the JSC Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet’s Barents Sea

Ibercisa Deck Machinery was involved in the construction of the Barents Sea, with the key supply of 41 deck winches that will be repeated on three sister ships. A contract of some 2 million euro per vessel that created more than 26,000 hours of work. JSC Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet chose to incorporate “next generation electronically driven machinery, with an AFE system, control systems and remote monitoring. It also has efficient energy control for regenerative cycles and consumption systems combined with Scantrol fishing control to maintain trawl net symmetry”, explains Roberto Rodríguez Orro, General Manager of Ibercisa Deck Machinery, to Industrias Pesqueras Spanish fishing magazine. 

Ibercisa’s design, manufacture and supply of the deck machinery was based on the success of the Pechora, a Russian trawler constructed at Tersan. “We took the Norwegian project as a basis as well as the vessel Andenesfisk-1, on which the equipment of our Spanish colleagues was installed. We visited the Norwegian vessel five times and received very positive feedback about the work of the trawl package. That’s why we chose this manufacturer”, says Mr. Nikolay Nazarenko, Director of Development of UF North West Fishing Consortium, to Industrias Pesqueras.

The Barents Sea began the relationship with Vyborg and has allowed the Vigo firm to sign new contracts with Russian shipowners, specifically 4 longliners for Virma, two trawlers for Okeanrybfloat, two trawlers for Luntos and one for Pacific Fisheries. But the experience of Ibercisa Deck Machinery in the Russian market didn’t begin there; it already goes back several decades, with more than 100 Russian trawlers with Ibercisa winches on board. To get here it has been necessary “to earn their confidence, because Russian vessels don’t all operate the same way, and not all fishing grounds are the same.” According to Roberto Rodríguez, “these are vessels that spend almost the entire year fishing, with very intensive use, and they are relatively self- sufficient, which is why they value reliability so highly. Confidence and durability are key aspects”. 

Another of the Vigo company’s strong points is its technical support. Ibercisa has a representative for the Russian market, but the distance between the fishing grounds is a challenge, even more so now in the context of the pandemic, in which you have to contend with border closures. The company also has technical support in Norway, where the Barents Sea calls in during its operations. 

Ibercisa Deck Machinery supplied the Barents Sea with 3 electric split trawl winches; 2 electric trawl lane winches, 8 electric sweep line winches, 1 electric auxiliary winch, 2 electric cod end winches, 2 hydraulic out haul winches, 1 hydraulic capstan, 2 electric cargo winches, 2 electric topping winches, 2 electric slewing winches, 2 electric net drums, 1 electric anchor winch, 2 roller stoppers, one electric net sounder winch and 7 hydraulic auxiliary winches. 

The Barents Sea will operate in the North Atlantic and in the Barents Sea, fishing cod and haddock, which they will process in the onboard plant that has various production options, including a filleting capacity of 40 tonnes a day, H&G and a freezing capacity of 100 tonnes a day. The fish meal plant can produce 60 tonnes a day and the canning sections up to 5000 tins of roe and fish oil. “Normally we are harvesting in Norwegian and Barents Sea including Norwegian economic zone, Svalbard zone, Russian economic zone.

The Barents Sea is designed for single or double trawl fishing, which gives fishing options for shrimp and bottom feeding fishing, as well as being able to change to pelagic trawling if necessary. Its daily fishing capacity is 160 tonnes. “Hi-tech trawl equipment; filleting line; cargo palletising system, floating frequency”, Nikolay Nazarenko mentions as the most notable technical advances of the Barents Sea.
